Review: Lady of Devices by Shelley Adina

Review by Pauline Creeden

“Steampunk…whatever that is.” – Book Riot (on Facebook)

What is Steampunk?

It’s a sub-genre of science fiction where reality is bent and the ingenuity of the author’s imagination are the only limits of what can be created. What would the world be like if the combustion engine and nuclear fusion never took off?  If steam-powered landaus ruled the streets and clockwork mother’s helpers swept the floor? The result is an alternate reality where morals, justice, and invention reign as it did in the Victorian Era.

In Lady of Devices, Shelley Adina introduces us to this world through the eyes of aristocratic Claire Trevelyan. A young woman who struggles for independence in a world where she is expected to marry rich and keep quiet. But necessity is often the mother of invention, and when her fragile world shatters, Claire finds the key to her freedom.

This is the first in a series of well-reviewed books set in the Steampunk world. For those who like the melding of Victorian culture with the fantastic fantasy of reality bending science fiction, this one will be right up their alley. Think: Oliver Twist meets League of Extraordinary Gentleman. The author’s voice is unique and appropriate for the historical era.

I received this book as a giveaway prize from “Clash of the Titles.” The cover art is gorgeous, and I was excited to read it. I enjoyed my romp in this world Shelly Adina created, and I’ll be looking into the next in this series.

Sounds great! I haven’t read any steampunk, but I did enjoy watching “League” so I may have to check this one out.
